Here is a Control Panel Extension for Microsoft VirtualCD
| Quote: | Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel lets you create a virtual CD drive on your hard disk
Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel for Windows XP lets you create a virtual CD drive on your hard disk. Some visitors to the site have confirmed that it works with Windows 2000 too (but this is not stated in Microsoft's official readme).
For anyone unfamiliar with the terms 'virtual CD' or 'CD emulator', they mean that you can copy the entire contents of a CD-ROM to your hard disk and run the programs or access the files without the need for the original CD.
Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel is able to make files faster, more accessible and more convenient. Given the speed and size of today's hard drives, you could easily fit a number of CDs onto your hard drive without noticing the difference. Assuming you had 30 full CDs, these would take around 20GB on a hard drive and all will be accessible after a few clicks of a mouse.
Hard drives are about 10 times faster than a CD, plus you can instantly access the file instead of grabbing the CD case, inserting the CD and awaiting for the contents to load.
It's true, you could try copying the files over to the hard drive, but this can get messy, plus some programs require a CD to be loaded in order to run. This virtual CD program 'pretends' it is a CD drive (even though the files are on your hard drive), so your programs will run as normal.
It only works with ISO images
You may now use the drive letter as if it were a local CD-ROM device. When you are finished you may unmount, stop, and remove the driver from memory using the driver control. |
| Code: | The needed driver is in your system32 dir so just browse there when you need it. |

Hello Kel,
Is this some kind of a Virtual Drive function like the one provided by popular utilities such as Daemon Tools, Alcohol, Nero and the like?
If it is, i didn't know Microsoft has provided one particular application like this.
Forgive my ignorance if i'm wrong with my presumption. |

Would be nice to have a Shell Extension of it if that's the case. _________________

Interesting to see a virtual CD app from M$. The only app with this name was the one here ---> http://www.virtualcd-online.com/ (maybe some TM issues in the future ), which is great in terms of utility, but really sucks at emulation. The best way to go in terms of emulation would be Alcohol/D-Tools wich use, basically the same core emulator and they both support Starwind/Starport (a great utility IMHO).
And no, this is not the same thing as the Alcohol/D-Tools core emulators. They emulate a SCSI drive and a SCSI controller. The fact that it uses this kind of emulation makes it very hard for apps to know that the drive doesn't actually exist.
My point was, could there be a D-Tools addon? My opinion is that it would be vary hard. Both Alcohol & D-Tools interfere with a windows (CD) update (something about their SCSI miniport driver) and consequently could with a fresh install too. Does anyone know (for sure) that it can('t) be done? If, somehow, it can be done, could someone take care of it? (Because I'm rather new at this, haven't even done my first addon. Acctualy i did my first addon... , I used the repacker exe to include my winrar registration data... .) This should only be attempted by experienced people, because, if hanlde improperly, the core emulators, can really screw up your Windows. |

I made a switchless silent installer for DAEMON Tools V3.47 that runs just fine from svcpack.inf. I'm in the process of converting my installers to addons, but I haven't gotten to that one yet. Check the link in my sig if you're interested in it.
On the other hand I also made a two part installer for DAEMON Tools V4.03. Two part because the first part can be installed just fine from svcpack.inf, and the second part you need to run from RunOnceEx. Just the nature of the beast with the V4.x series. This is also found in the link in my sig. _________________ Moving on... |

There was a typo in the addreg section.
Now it will go into the CPL area.
Note this is done via the registry NOT through a CPL file. _________________

@TAD: I suggest a verry good alternative to Virtual CD, ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver | Quote: | | ImDisk is a virtual disk driver for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008. It can create virtual hard disk, floppy or CD/DVD drives using image files or system memory. The install package installs a console-mode control program called imdisk.exe and a Control Panel applet. After install is finished, type imdisk without parameters for syntax help or double click the ImDisk icon in the Control Panel. It also adds a menu item in Windows Explorer so that you can right-click on a file to mount it as a virtual disk drive... The driver, service and control program can be uninstalled using the Add/Remove programs applet in the Control Panel. No reboot is required for installing or uninstalling. | The package content can be extracted and this command line can be used for installing: | Code: | rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 .\imdisk.inf | and this for uninstalling ... | Code: | rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultUninstall 132 .\imdisk.inf | or, not tested yet, but using code65536 runinf.exe can hide the inf install process, | Code: | runinf.exe DefaultInstall 128 .\imdisk.inf | No reboot is required for installing or uninstalling. |
